Experience and clients

I've been an independent writer and editor for more than a decade. I love places and have done a lot of work in the property and travel sectors. I'm concerned about the future, so increasingly choose projects with a social responsibility angle. But at heart I'm a committed generalist, curious about almost everything. It's one of the reasons I became a writer.

I've written and/or edited words for:
I had another life before I was a self-employed writer

But almost all my roles were editorial. I edited BP's global website, managed B2B websites at BT, edited travel topics for about.com, supported the publications team at a family-research institute, did internal comms for Dow Jones and once travelled around my home state for a whole wonderful summer doing research for a Frommer's travel guide. Yes, possibly the sunniest job I'll ever have was also my first.

TransAtlantic, or how and where I learned to write

I studied journalism at the University of North Carolina, where many of the greats of American journalism have studied or taught. Afterwards, I won a bursary to move to London and try to become a foreign correspondent. ("Dear bursary givers, very sorry to inform you that my correspondent's career never took off. Stop."). More recently, I did an MA in creative writing at Goldsmiths.
